Food waste isn’t just a monetary issue – it’s also intrinsically linked with global warming. Nearly 30 million tons of food is wasted per year, with the vast majority headed to landfills. This is almost 1/3 of the total US food supply, and while numbers had drastically decreased during the pandemic, the current per capita waste has come right back up again.
At roughly 442 pounds of waste per person per year, the end goal is to drastically reduce this as it is a major contributor of methane gas in landfills. To do this, we will need no only help from nonprofit education and individual cities and states, but legislation to outline beneficial alternatives to landfill (donation, animal feed, compost).
